1625（寛永2）年に開かれた曹洞宗の寺院で、箱館戦争の戦火を免れたので本堂は松前の寺院の中で最古のもの。本堂と庫裏は1842（天保13）年の建築で、平成4年に国の重要文化財に指定されました。
門やお堂の各所に見事で精密な龍の彫刻がありますのでお見逃しなく！
また、境内には蝦夷霞桜と命名された桜の名木があり、開花時期は5月7～14日とのことです。この桜の木は隣の光善寺の血脈桜と地下でつながっているという話も伝わっています。
