寺伝によると、1533（天文2）年に建立された浄土宗の寺院です。
3度火災にあっていますが、1760（宝暦10）年建立の仁王門、1847（弘化4）年建立の鐘楼門などは残っています。（写真は鐘楼門）
また、伝説の残る血脈桜、1783（天明3）年積雪で町の芝居小屋が倒壊し多数の死者が出ましたが、その供養に建てた大石仏、義経伝説の残る「義経山」の石碑もあります。
