昭和4年の駒ケ岳噴火によって、周辺の景色が壊れてしまったそうですが、岩を流れ落ちる清流が三味線の音色に聞こえることから、この名がついたとも、三味線の糸に見えたからとも言われています。
また、快晴の日にはこの場所から羊蹄山、昭和新山、有珠山を望むことが出来ます。
国道沿いにあり、すぐ横に駐車場もあるので、ドライブの小休止にはぴったりです。
