この杉がいつ誰によって植えられたかは不明ですが、この地には大正4年まで雷公神社があり、現在は上雷神社となっています。
雷公神社は伝承では寛元2年（1244）に創建したとされています。
最上徳内や菅江真澄、伊能忠敬などの知内を訪れた歴史上著名な人物がこの鳥居を通過しているそうです。
幕末の探検家であり北海道の名付け親でもある松浦武四郎も、弘化2年（1845）にここを訪れ、朱塗りの鳥居が立ち、巡検使が立ち寄るところと「蝦夷日誌」に書き記しています。
